BENE VAGIENNA
AMONGST ART AND TRADITION
Bene Vagienna, situaded in the province of Cuneo, is an ancient town of old
Piedmont, with a population of 3,300 inhabitants. Featuring charming old streets,
porticoes and ramparts which take the visitor back in time, to a more peaceful
and relaxed world away from the stress and buste of the big towns. This township
dates back to the period of Augustus around the year zero, at the time when
Augusta Bagiennorum was founded, about 2 Kilometres from the provincial capital
in the Roncaglie region. This town, togheter with Turin and Aosta were the
most important of the Gaul territories.
The narrow streets, wide porticoes, the host of confraternities and the elegant
stately buildings all bear testimony to the past glory of the town. There
are no less than seven different churches in the town centre itself, in which
important art wrks are preserved in the Civic Musem which is housed in the
stately Lucerna di Rorà building.
